Marchers protest Seattle police shooting

SEATTLE — About 80 marchers gathered in Seattle to protest the fatal Aug. 30 shooting of an American Indian woodcarver by a Seattle police officer.

The protest Tuesday was organized by the Seattle affiliate of the October 22nd Coalition, a national group concerned about police violence.

Officer Ian Birk fatally shot John T. Williams on a street corner. Williams was carrying a 3-inch folding knife. Birk says the man failed to drop the knife after being repeatedly ordered to do so.

The group gathered at the site of the shooting and later marched to the Seattle police West Precinct. Seattle police say the shooting is under investigation.
