MARYSVILLE — The search has started for a replacement for Tom Grady, who resigned from the Marysville City Council earlier this month.
Marysville will start accepting letters of interest today from residents interested in the job. However, three people already have jumped the gun and told City Hall they are interested in being appointed to the post.
They are:
Grady’s seat has been vacant since Feb. 13, when he quit as Snohomish County prosecutors were preparing to charge him with felony forgery. Grady, a manager at the Marysville Albertson’s store for 13 years, allegedly forged armored car deposit slips and other documents to hide the disappearance of $38,000.
On Monday, council members said it was time to start talking about how to fill the vacant seat.
"People are anxious," council member Donna Wright said, adding that residents had been asking when the council was going to take action.
The council members must vote to fill Grady’s seat before May 14 or the appointment will then move to the Snohomish County Council. The city will accept letters of interest until 5 p.m. March 13. Candidate interviews will be held at a later public meeting.
The appointee will serve the 18 months left in Grady’s unexpired term, until the next municipal election.
Although council members hope to find a candidate who everyone on the council can agree on, they admitted it might not happen on the first vote.
"On the first ballot or two, I would say slim to none chance that would happen," council member Jon Nehring said.
Nehring, who was just elected to his first term on the council, said he was hoping the new council member would be someone with priorities and a vision for the city.
Applicants must be registered to vote and have resided inside the city’s limits since Feb. 13, 2001.
Letters of interest, along with a statement of qualifications, can be sent to City Clerk Gerry Becker, Marysville City Hall, 4822 Grove St., Marysville, WA 98270.
