MARYSVILLE — Teachers at Marysville Getchell High School were sent a bogus email Monday about the school being for sale for a starting bid of $1.5 million.
That’s not true, said Jodi Runyon, executive assistant to the superintendent at the Marysvillle School District. In fact, the emails were part of a senior prank started when someone put up paper ‘For Sale’ signs on the campus that were found by staff Monday morning.
“They hung paper signs that were pretty harmless with no type of damage or vandalism,” Runyon said.
The school district’s spam filter prevented the teachers from receiving the email. The prankster also developed a fake online classified advertisement to sell the school that opened in September 2010. The email and ad described the campus, suggested that students at Marysville Getchell attend Marysville Pilchuck High School, and that the school could be “converted into apartment complexes or even a good correctional facility.”
Administrators at the two high schools didn’t know who was behind the prank on Monday afternoon.
“It’s that time of the year where pranks happen and sometimes it’s hard to pinpoint who the instigator was,” Runyon said. “They shouldn’t be doing this.”
