Three Marysville School District residents have filed a petition today with the Snohomish County Auditor’s Office in an attempt to recall Marysville School Board members Helen Mount and Ron Young.
The petition will automatically be forwarded to the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office, which will request a Superior Court hearing date. A judge will decide whether allegations made in the petition, whether they are true or not, constitute misfeasance, malfeasance or a violation of the board members’ oaths of office.
If so, organizers of the recall campaign would be given time to try to gather enough signatures of registered voters to place a recall vote on a ballot next year.
The people filing the petition raised several issues including a state audit highly critical of the district’s financial management and a Nov. 17 decision to extend Superintendent Linda Whitehead’s contract a third year.
In previous interviews, both Mount and Young said they believe they have done nothing to constitute a recall.
The school district has come under heavy criticism after a state-record 49-day strike this fall. Three incumbents were voted out Nov. 4.
The district is grappling with a $2 million shortfall from an $82.25 million budget it adopted last August. Much of the loss is because of declining enrollment.
The district still doesn’t have a contract with its teachers.
