MARYSVILLE — An 80-year-old man was in critical condition at a Seattle hospital Saturday night after being found unconscious in a house during a kitchen fire.
The man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center after he was found unresponsive in the bathroom of the home in the 10400 block of Shoultes Road. The kitchen fire was reported about 4:40 a.m. and filled the house with gas and smoke, Marysville Fire District spokeswoman Stephanie Price said.
Upon entering the burning home, firefighters rescued another elderly man, who was found on the floor near the doorway. The man told firefighters the 80-year-old man was possibly still inside. A woman who lives at the home was found outside.
Firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof to release smoke and gas from the home before they could search for the man. They found him in the bathroom with the door closed, Price said.
The man was rushed to Marysville-Pilchuck High School, where a helicopter picked him up for the flight to Harborview.
He was in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Investigators believe the fire started on a stove. The cause is under investigation by the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office. The cost of the damage to the home was unknown Saturday.
The Snohomish County Red Cross and Support 46 responded to provide food, clothing and shelter to family members.
Firefighters from Getchell, Tulalip Bay and Lake Stevens assisted the Marysville Fire District.
