MARYSVILLE — Mayor Dave Weiser presided over his last City Council meeting Monday.
The city plans to honor him as well as outgoing council members Mike Leighan and Suzanne Smith at a public dinner and farewell. The celebration will be in lieu of a council meeting Dec. 15.
Weiser, 55, served 12 years as mayor. He is leaving to become the new city administrator for the city of Ocean Shores.
Dennis Kendall was elected mayor in November.
Before serving on the council, Weiser attended Marysville schools, and he and his wife, Kathy, raised their children here.
Authorities credit Weiser with helping to make Marysville more of a regional player instead of a city that stands alone. He helped forge stronger ties with Lake Stevens, Arlington, Everett, the Tulalip Tribes and Snohomish County.
He played an important role in the State Avenue improvement project, as well as a variety of annexations, getting a new library and purchasing property for a waterfront park, among other accomplishments.
He was active in the community long before he became mayor. Weiser presided over the council while the city grew from about 7,000 residents to 30,000, and worked with 22 different council members along the way.
Leighan, 49, served three terms, part as mayor pro tem, presiding over council meetings when Weiser was not present. Leighan is chairman of the Marysville Fire Board. He was one of four candidates seeking Weiser’s job in the September primary.
Smith was elected to the council in 1990. She initially filed earlier this year to retain her seat and later withdrew.
