MARYSVILLE — Police have issued a warning about two homeless sex offenders who have been frequenting area homes.
Michael Peterson, 39, was convicted of third-degree rape in 1988 after he entered a woman’s apartment and sexually assaulted her while he was armed with a weapon, Marysville police detective Sgt. Jeff Goldman said. Peterson lived in the same apartment complex as the woman.
He moved to a home in the 7700 block of 64th Street NE, but he has since registered as homeless, making him a Level III offender under state law. The law requires convicted sex offenders to have a registered address with the county sheriff, or else be designated a Level III offender. Home addresses allow police to notify the public of the presence of those considered the most dangerous or likely to commit more crimes.
Peterson refused treatment during his prison term.

Kevin Renteria, 37, also a Level III offender, was convicted in Snohomish County Superior Court in 1998 of third-degree rape, Goldman said. His victim was a 19-year-old male acquaintance. In 1987, Renteria was convicted in King County of two counts of promoting prostitution involving 17- and 18-year-old males, Goldman said. Renteria is an untreated sex offender who has used weapons in his crimes, Goldman said.
Under a new state law that became effective July 1, sex offenders who register in Snohomish County are required to check in with the sheriff’s office daily instead of weekly, Goldman said.
"This notification is not intended to increase fear in our community," he said.
Police simply want residents to be aware that the registered offenders are visiting area residences, he said.
The police department’s Crime Prevention Division is available to help citizens organize block watches and to provide useful public safety information. Anyone with questions should call 360-651-5050. Anyone with information regarding current criminal activity by any offender should call 911.
