MARYSVILLE — The Marysville School District and the teachers union Thursday were reviewing each others’ proposals to set the school calendar for the rest of the year.
Once agreed upon by both sides, the calendar will determine how long winter and spring breaks will be — and determine when school will end in summer 2004.
The first school board meeting since the teachers strike has also been set for 4:30 p.m. Monday at the district office, 4220 80th St. NE. The public will have an opportunity to address the board until 5:20 p.m., then a regular board meeting will be held.
Among the items the board will discuss is a proposal to set more meetings next week and to hear public input about the calendar for the new school year, board member Erik Olson said Thursday.
Olson will present the meeting schedule he is proposing: 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Quil Ceda Elementary School, 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Shoultes Elementary School and 10 a.m. Saturday at Marysville Junior High School.
Elaine Hanson, president of the 650-member Marysville Education Association, said Thursday that she had seen neither the district’s calendar proposal nor the union’s, which is being handled by negotiators.
The school calendar is usually negotiated together with salary and work conditions. This gives an opportunity for flexibility in negotiations, she said.
Marysville’s 11,000 students returned to school this week. Marysville teachers were on strike for 49 days after negotiations broke down on a three-year contract over salary and other issues.
