The Marysville School District has lost one candidate and added another in its search for a new superintendent.
Jim Coolican, superintendent of the 9,400-student Peninsula School District in Gig Harbor, has withdrawn from consideration, the Marysville district announced Wednesday.
Coolican was replaced by Ken Limon, assistant superintendent in the 21,000-student Edmonds School District, where he supervises secondary education. He previously was director of instruction and elementary operations in the Lake Stevens School District.
Other finalists are Fred Maiocco, a U.S. Military Academy graduate and assistant superintendent of the 32,000-student Aurora School District near Denver, Colo., and Larry Nyland, academic officer for school improvement in the 18,000-student Highline School District. Nyland is a former superintendent in Pasco and an interim superintendent in the Shoreline School District.
The district has set up interviews for the three candidates with staff and district residents for today, Friday and Monday.
The community forum segments of the interviews have been extended by a half-hour from what was previously announced. They will be 5-6:30 p.m. each of those days at district headquarters, 4220 80th St. NE.
The school board hopes to name a superintendent within the next two weeks.
With three new members elected after the state record 49-day teachers strike last fall, the school board reached a $340,000 buyout agreement with the former superintendent, Linda Whitehead, in March. All members had been critical of district leadership during the strike.
