MARYSVILLE — School board president Sherri Crenshaw resigned Monday from the Marysville School District, one week after board member Michael Kundu’s departure.
The two resignations were not connected, Crenshaw said.
“It’s just a coincidence,” she said. “It had nothing whatsoever to do with him.”
Crenshaw led the board as it unanimously called for Kundu’s resignation for his comments connecting racial genetics with intelligence. He left office July 12.
Crenshaw plans to pursue a teaching career in the district, and so needed to leave elected office, she said.
“I’d love to teach anywhere in Marysville,” she said. “I’d really love to teach at either Totem (Middle School) or Tulalip (Elementary School), because I think I’d be effective.”
The departure of two board members could pose a small headache for district officials. To hold a vote, the three remaining members all will need to be present.
“We might have to work around people’s schedules a little more,” Marysville Superintendent Larry Nyland said.
This isn’t the first time the school board has been faced with two openings at once, however. Crenshaw was first appointed to the board in July 2006. There were two vacancies at that time.
Crenshaw then was elected to her seat in November 2007, taking 64 percent of the vote in a two-way race. Her four-year term runs through 2011.
The board may discuss at its Aug. 2 meeting how it will select new board members.
The district may stage a call for applications in mid-August, as summer vacation draws to a close, and then make appointments in September, Nyland said.
Board vice president Cindy Erickson will take over Crenshaw’s leadership responsibilities until the board chooses a new president.
