MARYSVILLE – A Kirkland architect has been hired to begin designing three elementary schools in Marysville.
The Marysville School Board last week selected Hutteball &Oremus to start preliminary design work on a new elementary school. It will also begin designing buildings to replace aging campuses at Cascade and Liberty elementary schools.
Money for the work – not to exceed $150,000 – is expected to come from the district’s capital improvements fund.
All three projects will be part of a $170 million bond measure Sept. 20 that also includes a new high school, renovations at Marysville-Pilchuck High School and other improvements.
Superintendent Larry Nyland said the preliminary work could save $1 million and move up the school’s opening by a year.
“Basically, we are saving on inflation by trying to get the project done a year earlier,” Nyland said. “We are doing our best to stretch the time and the money.”
If the bond passes, final drawings for Cascade and Liberty could be completed by February with construction starting by June. The schools could open as early as 2007.
Marysville now has 117 portables across the district and has run out of room to add more on some campuses. It has not passed a bond for new school construction since 1990, the longest among school districts in Snohomish County.
The enrollment growth is leading to some creative temporary solutions. At Pinewood Elementary School, the district is planning to put two classrooms on the stage.
