MARYSVILLE — Flags will fly at half-staff across Marysville on April 21 in honor of Ray Hancock, a retired firefighter who passed away earlier this month.
Affectionately nicknamed “Ragin’ Ray” by colleagues, Hancock joined the Marysville Fire District in 1993 and also worked on the technical rescue team. Before joining the fire district, Hancock was a diver with the U.S. Navy.
“His name fit him well. He truly was like a ‘Ray of Sunshine,’” Fire Chief Martin McFalls said in a statement Thursday. “He had a bold presence and booming voice with an outgoing, friendly nature. Ray’s personality and approach to life made him a pleasure, not to mention a lot of fun, to be around.”
Hancock, 57, of Arlington, died April 1 after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease.
A memorial service is planned for April 21.
