MARYSVILLE — Volunteers are hoping to send a clear message about graffiti.
It’s not welcome in the city.
Individual volunteers and groups including active duty sailors from Navy Recruiting District Seattle and Naval Air Station Whidbey Island are expected Saturday to be part of the first community Graffiti Paint Out.
The volunteers plan to meet at 9 a.m. in the Cedarcrest Middle School north parking lot at 6400 88th St. NE. They will be given painting materials and a map of places to go to paint over graffiti, city spokesman Doug Buell said.
“It’s something we wanted to try,” Buell said. “We’ve done things on the enforcement side and we’ve made lots of important arrests. The mayor wants to send the message that we have zero tolerance for graffiti in the community.”
Navy Recruiting District Seattle donated $1,000 for supplies, Buell added. Spots that volunteers are scheduled to clean include the Kellogg Village area on 100th Street and 108th Street NE east to 67th Avenue NE. Other areas include 136th Street, downtown, and along the railroad tracks.
Volunteers must provide their own transportation to the paint-out locations.
Residents can report graffiti by visiting the city website and filling out a form under the “I Want to” menu. The city’s Graffiti Task Force also started a program in the spring to help remove graffiti from neighborhood fences at no expense to homeowners.
