COLUMBUS, Ga. — Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson is demanding that an online news organization delete from its website a story declaring that her Georgia community is America’s “brokest city.”
The Daily Beast published the story Tuesday ranking several U.S. cities. It said it used unemployment rates, median household income, and average debt to compile its report.
The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports (http://bit.ly/rTH9En) that the mayor sent a letter to Newsweek/Daily Beast LLC, saying the analysis was “recklessly designed to damage” the Georgia city.
The online publication says Columbus had the highest debt load and fourth-lowest median household income of the cities it considered.
The rankings included several cities across the South, including Mobile, Ala. (7); Augusta, Ga. (10); Macon, Ga. (14); Montgomery, Ala. (19); Birmingham, Ala. (23) and Savannah, Ga. (25).
