SEATTLE – The family of a fugitive killed in a police raid at a Monroe apartment plans to sue the Monroe and Bothell police departments, a lawyer for the family said Friday.
Harold McCord Jr.’s family also will ask the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Seattle to review the investigation into his death, lawyer Bradley Marshall said. The family wants federal charges filed against the officers who fatally shot McCord.
Snohomish County prosecutors declined to file charges against any officers Tuesday. The day before, a King County inquest jury unanimously ruled the officers believed McCord was an imminent threat when they fired at him.
McCord was killed the day after he escaped from the Pierce County Courthouse in Tacoma.
Police testified that McCord had a dark-colored, pistol-shaped object in his hand was threatening to shoot them. He did not have a real gun.
McCord’s family has criticized tactics police used during the raid and maintains McCord wanted to surrender.
The inquest jury, however, ruled that police gave McCord an opportunity to surrender, and he chose not to.
