Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna and Snohomish County Prosecutor Mark Roe have been asked to pursue civil action against a Seattle political consultant in the wake of its role in last month’s primary.
State Sen. Jean Berkey, D-Everett, asked the two law enforcement leaders Friday to look into the actions of Moxie Media and two political action committees set up by its staff in the waning days of the primary.
Here’s the story. The letter to McKenna and Roe from Berkey’s attorney, Phil Talmadge, is attached.
Berkey, who lost the race, is alleging the firm violated election law by not disclosing the source of funding for two mailers that Moxie Media produced in support of a Republican opponent. This is basically the same complaint she has filed with the state Public Disclosure Commission.
Up until the company produced those mailers, it had been the consultant for a nearly $300,000 campaign against Berkey financed primarily by unions representing state employees, teachers and health care workers.
Moxie Media’s Lisa MacLean has denied any wrongdoing.
