SNOHOMISH — A public memorial service for beloved Snohomish High School teacher Tuck Gionet is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the school gym.
Gionet, a longtime civics teacher and coach, died Saturday after a two-year battle with cancer. Gionet is survived by his wife, Marci, and their children TJ, Callie and Kyle.
His family and friends are encouraging the community to pack the gym to celebrate Gionet’s life. He spent more than 30 years teaching and coaching in Snohomish.
His lessons in the classroom were well-known throughout the state. He regularly took students to the Capitol in Olympia to pitch lawmakers on legislation. His students also organized forums for local, state and federal political candidates. He was named civics teacher of the year for Washington in 2013
In the coming weeks, other events are planned to celebrate Gionet’s contributions to the community. A moment of silence is planned at the Snohomish vs. Glacier Peak football game Sept. 4.
There will be a candle lighting at SHS the first week of school. More details will be provided in the program at Tuesday’s memorial service.
On Sept. 14, students and staff are invited to wear white shirts and ties to school. Every day the no-nonsense teacher wore a tie and often had a pen or pencil tucked behind an ear.
The high school is located at 1316 5th St.
Donations can be made to the Tuck Gionet Student Support Fund through the Snohomish Kiwanis, PO Box 1035, Snohomish, WA 98291.
