COUPEVILLE — A mental health counselor who had offices in Freeland and Oak Harbor has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for taking indecent liberties with a female patient.
Glenn W. Jolley, 59, was found guilty of the charge in November by an Island County Superior Court jury and was sentenced recently. He was not convicted on two other charges.
He was found innocent on a charge of attempted indecent liberties for allegedly giving hugs and back rubs to a female patient.
Also, the jury could not reach a decision on a second-degree rape charge in which prosecutors alleged Jolley raped a 15-year-old girl in 1994 while giving her a ride home from a counseling session.
Jolley will be required to register as a convicted sex offender upon his release, said Michael Henegen, Island County deputy prosecuting attorney.
Henegen said, based on an agreement, the prosecutor’s office won’t pursue additional action on the charge on which the jury could not reach a verdict as long as Jolley does not appeal the conviction.
Eight women had told police that Jolley abused his trust as a counselor and preyed upon them sexually or sexually harassed them while they were under his care.
Jolley no longer holds a mental health counselor’s license, and one of the provisions on his release is that he does not engage in counseling, Henegen said.
He said Jolley will also have three years of community custody following his release.
In the incident that led to the conviction, a female patient of six months said Jolley fondled her breasts and other parts of her body during a counseling session. Ironically, she sought his counseling because of past sexual and mental abuse.
The standard sentencing range for the conviction is 15 to 18 months, Henegen said.
