BASIN CITY — A 96-bed housing project for migrant workers is set to open March 1 in rural Franklin County.
Officials say the $3.25 million duplex-style development will help farmers handle the influx of migrant workers during harvest season. It was paid for a state Department of Commerce grant and private money.
The nonprofit Washington Farm Labor Association owns the building and will manage housing. The Franklin County Farm Bureau has leased the land to the nonprofit. Farmers will rent beds for their seasonal workers.
The Tri-City Herald reports some critics said the price was too high and worried about possible increased crime.
