100th birthday
Baer
Rachel “Rae” Baer of Lynnwood plans to celebrate her 100th birthday on Saturday at the Nile Golf and Country Club in Mountlake Terrace. As part of the celebration she plans to play nine holes.
Baer was born in a small farm house in Ruff, Wash., on June 5, 1910. She was one of six children born to Catherine and Frederick Schwarzwalter.
German was spoken at home while Baer was growing up. She did not learn to speak English until she went to school in a one-room schoolhouse. Her transportation to and from school was a horse named Doll.
Baer went to college at Central Normal School, which was later named Central Washington University.
Baer has two children, Gerald Keith Crouch and Kathleen Sharon Kobs, from her first husband, Gordon Keith, who was killed in a logging accident in 1945. She went on to marry the love of her life, George Baer, in 1964. They lived the rest of their years together in Seattle and Edmonds.
After Rae’s retirement from Seattle City Light in 1966, she pursued several interests. She enrolled in art classes and, after experimenting with different mediums, became proficient in watercolor to the extent of winning entries in the juried art show at the Edmonds Art Festival. She also belonged to Gallery North and Northwest Artists’ Association.
She often travelled to Yuma, Ariz., for the winter with her husband and took golf lessons during her retirement.
Baer has eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
