News that Mill Creek is considering contracting with the sheriff’s office for police services is causing a bit of a stir.
A story about it from Tuesday already has two dozen comments from Herald readers.
At this week’s City Council meeting, the Mill Creek police officers’ guild presented a letter saying guild members are opposed to contracting.
The letter says that guild members believe people in Mill Creek want their own police department and that the city shouldn’t give up control of its police force. You can read the letter in the attached document.
Mill Creek City Manager Tim Burns has received a contract proposal from Sheriff John Lovick, Burns said Thursday.
Burns will review the proposal and make a recommendation to council, he said. The earliest that recommendation might come is Oct. 11.
At this point, the future of police services is not on the agenda for next week’s council meeting. It is, however, likely to come up in public comment.
It’s not clear, for now, how seriously the city is considering outsourcing law enforcement services. In Snohomish, the decision to start negotiating a sheriff’s contract came months after the idea was first floated.
In July, the Snohomish Police Guild came out in support of a sheriff’s contract. You can read their letter here.
