PORT ANGELES — A 21-year-old father and his 22-month-old daughter were found safe Sunday near the woods on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula after spending two nights lost in the forest and eating salmonberries to sustain themselves.
Jared T. Egnew and Madison E. Egnew walked to Highway 112 on Sunday morning and asked a passer-by for help, ending a massive search, the Clallam County sheriff’s office said.
Egnew and the girl left a campground Friday where the family lives so he could calm the child, who was crying. Family members reported the two missing hours later.
Deputies found the car stuck in a remote logging road about 25 miles outside Port Angeles the next day.
Search crews expanded their search from the spot the car was found, but found no signs of the two by Saturday night.
Crews were preparing to search again Sunday when Egnew walked out of the woods.
The father and daughter needed no medical attention, authorities said.
The sheriff’s office said Egnew tried to take a shortcut through the woods, but found the terrain more rugged than he anticipated.
