SHELTON — A mission to break the world land-speed record stopped in Shelton over the weekend.
The North American Eagle is a converted Lockheed F-104 Starfighter jet.
It was at Sanderson Field Airport in Shelton on Saturday for an engine check. The massive vehicle was strapped to the pavement, with chains keeping it in place.
The converted jet engine is capable of propelling down a track at hundreds of miles per hour.
The Olympian reported the North American Eagle team is hoping to surpass the record speed of 763 mph set in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada in 1997.
A team made up of American and Canadian volunteers began building the jet in Spanaway in 1999. The North American Eagle has been tested 31 times on tracks in California and Nevada.
