MONROE — A State Department of Corrections team is investigating the apparent suicide Wednesday of an inmate at the Monroe Correctional Facility.
Correctional officers found the man hanging from an electric cord tied to a water pipe in a shop at the facility after he didn’t turn up for an 11 a.m. prisoner count, said Cathy Kopoian, a Monroe prison spokeswoman, said today.
Two correctional officers and another inmate pulled the man down and began administering first aid. The Monroe police, paramedics and the prison’s hospital staff were called. Police searched the man’s cell and found a hand-written suicide note, Kopoian said.
The man was serving time for a 2003 Spokane murder. He arrived at the Monroe facility March 28, 2005. He worked as an officer clerk in the panel shop. The earliest date he could be released was December 2025, Kopoian said.
