As much as a half-foot of snow could fall Wednesday making last-minute shopping and holiday travel nearly impossible for many.
“It’s just going to be messy everywhere,” said Kirby Cook, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Seattle.
A winter storm warning was to be issued this afternoon as more bad weather takes aim at the region.
Snow should start falling after midnight, Cook said. By midday Wednesday, there’s a good chance temperatures will warm and the snow could turn to rain.
Then, the potential for urban flooding is strong, particularly while storm drains remain clogged with snow and ice.
More snow is forecast for the lowland areas of Snohomish County into Thursday. Snow is likely before 10 a.m. on Christmas Day.
Travel over the mountain passes will be a challenge, Cook said.
Heavy snow is forecast for the mountains through the weekend. Driver should be prepared for extreme winter conditions.
Travelers today found better conditions. Most flights were on time at Sea-Tac and Greyhound and Amtrak service resumed normal operations.
Tonight’s commute could continue to be tricky as temperatures drop and melting water on the road freezes.
Drivers are cautioned to take it slow and leave plenty of space between vehicles.
