OLYMPIA — A hiring event for a new Recreational Equipment Inc. store under construction in the Olympia area drew more than 400 job seekers for about 50 jobs.
The store is expected to open this spring at the Westfield Capital mall.
Mall spokeswoman Jennifer Johnson said by the time the two-hour event was over Thursday, 421 people had shown up.
The Olympian reported that while many said they were unemployed, some said they were applying for a job with the outdoors store because of REI’s reputation.
Said Tamra Owens of Lakewood, “I want to work for a company that I believe in.” She said she’s been looking for work since May.
