An Auburn man was charged Wednesday with felony malicious harassment for allegedly participating with two juveniles in a vandalism and arson spree Nov. 2 at a Mountlake Terrace mosque.
Shawn Deroy Urvina, 36, is accused of breaking windows at the Masjid Omar Al Farooq Mosque in the 5500 block of 238th Street SW.
Several windows were broken by rocks and apples, and someone ignited a curtain, causing fire damage estimated at $1,500, according to charging papers filed by deputy prosecutor David Kurtz.
The two Mountlake Terrace juveniles, ages 17 and 15, were charged with harassment in Snohomish County Juvenile Court. The younger youth also is charged with second-degree arson. The older youth has pleaded guilty and agreed to testify in the other two cases, Kurtz said.
According police reports, Urvina and his two younger brothers-in-law had been drinking when someone wanted to "stick up for our country." They walked to the mosque, picked up some rocks and threw them at the front-door windows.
They ran to hide, and then picked up some apples and returned to pelt more windows.
On a third trip, one of the juveniles allegedly said: "Let’s show those Arabians what’s up. I’m going to light the church on fire," police reports say.
One of the youths looked for some gas in neighboring yards but couldn’t find any. "He then came back and said he was just going to light the curtain," according to police reports.
Urvina was being held on $25,000 bail. Kurtz said the defendant has second-degree assault conviction and seven misdemeanor convictions in King County. He asked the court to maintain the bail.
