SEATTLE – Most homes and businesses in Western Washington that lost power during the weekend windstorm were expected to have electricity in time for the Super Bowl kickoff, Puget Sound Energy said Sunday.
The utility reported that of its 140,000 customers without power Saturday, 100,000 had electricity again by early Sunday. Puget Sound Energy called in crews from Canada, Eastern Washington, Idaho, Oregon, California and Nevada to make sure Seahawks fans could watch the Super Bowl.
The utility said about 1,000 customers in Kitsap County, a few hundred in Island County, northeast King County, Vashon Island and some small pockets elsewhere in Western Washington would have to wait until today or Tuesday to get their power back.
The Highway 520 floating bridge across Lake Washington reopened to traffic early Sunday. The bridge had been closed since 9 a.m. Saturday because of high winds and rough water on the lake.
The state Department of Transportation said the bridge suffered minor damage to its mechanical span system, and repairs were required before reopening it to traffic.
During Saturday’s storm, the 42-year-old floating bridge endured steady winds of 50 miles per hour and gusts up to 75 miles per hour.
