EVERETT — A mother and son found dead in an Everett apartment Monday attempted suicide together in April, according to court papers.
The bodies were discovered in a unit in the 9000 block of West Mall Drive shortly before noon Monday, Everett police officer Aaron Snell said.
“At this time in the investigation, foul play does not appear to be a factor in the deaths,” Snell said. Everett police were summoned to the apartment complex to investigate the wellbeing of the occupants, Snell said.
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman as Sandra Lee Williams, 50. The man was identified as Spencer Lee Wlliams, 25. Police do not know when they died.
The cause and manner of their deaths are pending.
Court records show that Spencer Lee Williams was charged in July with first-degree arson after allegedly trying to set his apartment unit on fire on April 16.
At the time, he was living with his mother in an apartment building in the 11400 block of 9th Pl. W.
Firefighters were called when witnesses saw flames inside the apartment. Firefighters contained the blaze to the one unit on the upper floor of the two-story building.
Sandra Williams was found lying on the floor next to a sliding glass door; her son was in a reclining chair. Both were taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Police determined the pair conspired to commit suicide. Sandra Williams told authorities that she and her son intended to commit suicide by consuming Valium and alcohol. She was in the bathroom when he set the fire, which was not part of their plan, court papers said.
Spencer Williams was involuntarily committed to Western State Hospital. He was released from the hospital without conditions June 28, according to court papers.
A judge later signed a $25,000 bench warrant on the grounds the defendant posed a risk to himself and others.
