Mother, son killed as they cross highway

MAPLE VALLEY — A mother and her young son died when they were struck by a pickup as they tried to cross Highway 169 in the suburbs southeast of Seattle, State Patrol troopers said.

The patrol identified the victims early Tuesday as Cecilia Elizabeth A. Cruz, 43, and Esau Rivera-Cruz, 5, both of Seattle.

The driver of the 1997 Ford pickup, Mark E. King, 43, of Maple Valley, was not injured in the crash Monday night near the Maplewood Golf Course.

Investigators said the weather was dry and clear at the time.

One dead, one arrested in fatal crash in Seattle: One man was found dead and the driver of a pickup truck has been arrested following a fatal three-vehicle crash in Rainier Beach, city police said. The 47-year-old driver was arrested Sunday night after his full-size pickup rear-ended a 42-year-old man’s vehicle, which then struck a parked car, officer Scott Moss said. Victor Campbell, 48, of Seattle, was found dead on the street and investigators were trying to determine whether he had been in one of the vehicles or was walking at the time of the crash, Moss said. The 42-year-old man was being treated for serious head injuries at Harborview Medical Center. The pickup driver, arrested for investigation of driving under the influence, was treated at Harborview for minor injuries, police said.

Missing Ferry County girl found in Texas: A missing Republic girl was found safe in Texas after a man was arrested while attempting to flee police, the Ferry County Sheriff’s Office said. Jessica Rose Shores, 15, was taken into custody at a small cottage in Port Aransas, Texas, Ferry County sheriff’s detective J.R. Sharp said. It appeared Shores had been living there since about Thanksgiving with Stephen Recker, 30, Sharp said. Shores went missing in October. Detectives believed she left with Recker and another man, James Neace.

Officer dies during attempt to rescue Washington boy: A Bandon reserve police officer died Monday trying to rescue a Washington state teenager who had been pulled into the ocean. Emergency medical technicians and onlookers tried and failed to save the officer, Russell Simpson, 51, after he was swept into the surf. Simpson was assisting other rescue personnel who were tied together in a rope chain trying to reach the boy. Zed Leaf, 13, of Maple Valley, was rescued after he climbed into a basket lowered by a Coast Guard helicopter, according to Coast Guard spokesman Stephen Kemp. Leaf was treated for mild hypothermia at a Bandon hospital and released.
