SKYKOMISH — A motorcyclist died Thursday afternoon in a collision on U.S. 2 west of Skykomish.
The three-wheeled motorcycle was traveling west on the highway around 3:45 p.m. Traffic had slowed a few miles outside of Skykomish and the motorcyclist moved into oncoming lanes to avoid the congestion, said trooper Heather Axtman with the Washington State Patrol. It collided with a eastbound van, causing the rider to be ejected.
The motorcyclist’s body later was found underneath the van.
The impact of the wreck forced the motorcycle back into the westbound lanes where it was struck by a second vehicle, Axtman said. The motorcycle burst into flames.
No other injuries were reported.
The highway was still blocked two hours after the collision. There was no immediate estimate as to when the roadway would reopen.
