MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — A special team of detectives who investigate deaths involving police is trying to determine what happened at a home in Mountlake Terrace early today where a man was found dead.
The Snohomish Multi-Agency Response Team is investigating the apparent officer-involved shooting, Everett police Sgt. Robert Goetz said.
The incident unfolded just after 1 a.m. at a home in the 23700 block of 48th Avenue W.
An Mountlake Terrace police officer was on patrol in the area and heard what he thought may be gunshots, Goetz said. Neighbors also called 911 to report shots fired.
Additional officers converged on the scene and determined which home apparently was the location of the gunshots.
“An officer watching the house saw a man with a firearm leaning out a window of the house. The officer fired his weapon once at the subject with the firearm,” Goetz said in a prepared statement.
Three other people were in the house and unharmed. Officers went inside the home in search of the gunman. That’s when they found the slain man, Goetz said.
Several homes nearby in the area of were evacuated until the situation was resolved.
In keeping with department policy, the officer who fired a shot during the incident was placed on administrative leave. He is in his early 30s and has been with the Mountlake Terrace police for about three years.
Detectives this morning were obtaining a search warrant so they can enter the home and begin collecting evidence.
