Scuba divers celebrated in Mukilteo on Tuesday after the City Council unanimously reversed a ban on diving at Lighthouse Park.
Safety concerns surrounding the park’s boat launch led officials to ban the sport last August. After complaints from the scuba community, however, the city decided to erect signs warning that no lifeguard is on duty, but to allow diving.
Divers might help the local economy by spending money in town, officials said.
Nearly two dozen divers lobbied the City Council for change Tuesday wearing group T-shirts. After the vote, they celebrated by posting victory messages on a scuba diving Internet forum.
“We can dive! Where’s the party?” wrote a poster named CaseyB449. “I say the Fourth of July, in honor of democracy, and the right to have our voices heard.”
