MUKILTEO — A new city administrator for the city of Mukilteo is expected to be named at tonight’s City Council meeting.
Mukilteo Mayor Joe Marine said he will not identify the city’s top candidate until the meeting, which is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 4480 Chennault Beach Road. Council members are scheduled to vote whether to confirm the candidate to the position.
The candidate, a Washington state man, has already signed a letter of intent to work in Mukilteo, Marine said. He’s expected to start during the first week of November.
“I’m putting in 60 hours a week now, so it will be nice to have somebody else in there as well, so I know things are going to move forward,” Marine said.
The candidate was chosen from five finalists who were each interviewed separately by Marine, City Council members and city department managers. More than 30 people applied for the job.
“All of them were very professional, highly talented, highly motivated candidates,” City Councilman Marko Liias said. “It was heartening to see that so many people wanted to come to Mukilteo.”
The city has been without a permanent city administrator since former city administrator Richard Leahy left the position in January.
Since then, Lee Walton of Bainbridge Island has filled the position on an interim basis — and he’s filled in nicely, City Council President Jennifer ÂGregerson said.
“Lee has done a great job, and city business is plugging along like it always has,” she said.
Still, Gregerson said, it will be nice having the position filled by someone who will be around for a long time.
“We have so many long-term projects facing us, it will be really beneficial to know the person coordinating and orchestrating so many of those has the same long-term outlook as we do,” she said.
