RaeJean Hasenoehrl helped organize the “Helping Hands Linking Arms Multi-Community Food Drive” in north Snohomish County.
“We wanted the community to be involved,” she says. “That definitely happened.”
In the Stanwood and Camano Island area, $1,200 in cash and checks and more than 11,200 pounds of food and supplies were collected and given to the area’s three food banks: Stanwood Camano Food Bank, His Pantry at Camano Chapel, and the Food Closet at the Warm Beach Community Church.
In the communities of north Marysville, Arlington and Lakewood, teams collected and distributed among food banks more than 12,500 pounds of groceries and supplies.
Gil Powell of Stanwood normally loads his 16-foot cargo trailer with tools and supplies for a construction site. But during the donation week in September, the trailer was used to haul several thousand pounds of donated food and supplies.
He said the people he spoke with at the various locations felt that the greatest gift was the warm and compassionate feeling they received for being a part of the mega food drive.
Powell and his wife, Pat, helped the multi-community week of service in remembrance of Sept. 11, 2001.
Stanwood Mayor Dianne White said the cooperative spirit of the drive is what Stanwood is all about.
“We’re a community that takes care of our own,” White said. “We work together, we play together, and when help is needed, we give it.”
A youth group from Camano Island’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints collected donations at Stanwood’s Haggen Food and Pharmacy. They helped someone shop for $2,000 worth of goods for the drive.
Spokesman David Flake of Camano Island said that more than 830 volunteers hours were donated and he says to thank North County Fire and EMS for collecting and sorting around 3,000 pounds of food.

The Stillaguamish Senior Center of Arlington will offer the Smiles For Life Dental Access Program starting in October.
It’s a way for seniors to get dental screenings, cleanings and preventive services. The dental work is provided by a licensed hygienist with more than four decades of experience.
It’s not free, but costs are kept low and discounts and payment plans are available. If necessary, the hygienist will refer patients to an area dentist for additional care and treatment.
The first dental screening is planned for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and an appointment is necessary.
Application packets are available at the front desk of the senior center, or call Adele at 360-653-4551, ext. 234.
The Stillaguamish Senior Center is located at 18308 Smokey Point Blvd., Arlington.

The Camano Law Enforcement Support Foundation meets at 7 p.m. Monday at the Country Club Fire Station, 1326 S. Elger Bay Road on Camano Island.
The foundation supports Camano sheriff deputies and 32 volunteers of the Sheriff Citizen Patrol, along with the three Camano Island State Park rangers.
They are always looking for new members.
The foundation aims to buy uniforms for the citizen patrol uniforms and repair a patrol vehicle, says President Earl Barnard.
“The foundation’s purpose is to provide, purchase and then donate items either not budgeted or under budgeted for Camano Law agencies, and also to assist in community education and safety programs,” he says. “All such purchases are reviewed by the agencies as to their usability and suitableness prior to purchase.”
