TACOMA — Pierce County prosecutors upgraded charges to murder for a Puyallup man accused of setting his girlfriend on fire, causing fatal injuries.
The News Tribune reports 39-year-old Angel Reyes pleaded not guilty Monday to charges of murder, arson and resisting arrest.
Charging papers says Reyes was upset because he believed Maria Bazan had reconnected with an ex-boyfriend. They say he doused her with gasoline during a May 1 argument at their home and set her on fire. She ran outside for help and neighbors extinguished the flames with hoses.
The 34-year-old died about three weeks later at a Seattle hospital.
