SEATTLE — Murders in this city were down again in 2001, the police department reports.
There were 25 murders reported, compared with 36 in 2000, a decrease of 30 percent. There has been a decrease of nearly 50 percent over the past five years, police records show.
Police officials say they also experienced a high rate of clearance — or solution — on murder cases last year. The clearance rate on murders was 76 percent, compared with 60 percent in previous years in comparable jurisdictions.
Of the 25 murders in 2001, three were related to domestic violence. Only one multiple murder occurred. In 19 of the 25 homicides, police say a handgun was used to kill the victim.
