WASHINGTON — Hillary Clinton is ready to lead the nation from her first day in office and deliver the change the country needs, Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said Wednesday in endorsing the New York Democratic senator for president.
“Hillary and I both came to Washington together in 1993, and since that time she hasn’t stopped working on the priorities that matter most to America’s families,” Murray said.
The two women have worked together to pass port security legislation, stand up to the Bush administration on environmental issues and boost programs for veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Murray said.
Clinton “understands the challenges that face us here in Washington state from security at our northern border to cleaning up Hanford,” Murray said, referring to the nuclear complex in south-central Washington.
Clinton said she was delighted to have the endorsement of Murray, the Senate’s fourth-ranking Democrat and highest-ranking woman. Last month, Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., also endorsed Clinton.
“I am proud of the work Patty and I have done together in the Senate and I’m honored to have her support,” Clinton said in a statement. “With her help, we’re going to bring our message of change to voters across Washington.”
Clinton also has the endorsements of former Washington Gov. Gary Locke, Rep. Jay Inslee, King County Executive Ron Sims and Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon.
Gov. Chris Gregoire says she will endorse a presidential candidate before Washington’s Feb. 9 caucuses.
