The average price for gasoline in the U.S. dropped about 4 cents over the last two weeks, according to a national survey released Sunday in Camarillo. Iowa: Clinton takes lead in state
Hillary Rodham Clinton has taken the lead among Democratic presidential candidates in an Iowa poll, an encouraging sign of progress toward overcoming a big hurdle in the race. Although the New York senator is the clear front-runner in national surveys, Iowa has remained an elusive prize. She has been in a tight race with John Edwards, the former North Carolina senator, and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama in the state that begins the primary campaign voting in three months.
Maryland: Honoring firefighters
President Bush on Sunday honored fallen firefighters for their dedication and service to the nation. A plaque with the names of 87 firefighters who died in the line of duty last year was added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial on the campus at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg. The names of four others killed in previous years and not honored before also were added. Plaques surrounding the memorial, created in 1981, now show the names of more than 3,100 firefighters, according to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
N.Y.: Building blast blamed on gas
A leaky kitchen gas hose was blamed Sunday for an apartment building explosion that threw residents against walls, blew out their windows and hurled debris into the streets. The explosion Saturday injured more than 20 people; four girls were badly burned. Fire marshals believe natural gas leaked from a flexible hose connection behind a stove in a first-floor apartment, said Tony Sclafani, a fire department spokesman.
