California: 747 stuck on runway
An Air China jumbo jet bound for Beijing got stuck early Sunday when it veered off a taxiway at Los Angeles International Airport, aviation officials said. None of the 336 people on board were injured, officials said. The Boeing 747 missed the turn to the main runway, which is made of asphalt bolstered by concrete. The wheels under the right wing broke through a patch of unreinforced asphalt that was just 3 to 4 inches thick and “not designed to hold that much weight,” an airport spokeswoman said. When the pilot tried to accelerate out of the hole, the wheels dug in up to 3 feet deep, she said.

Rice rules out a presidential run
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Sunday ruled out running for president, responding to speculation fueled by a recent poll showing support for a Rice candidacy. She closed the door in appearances on Sunday talk shows, telling NBC’s “Meet the Press,” “I will not run for president of the United States.” “I won’t run,” she told ABC’s “This Week.” “I won’t. How’s that? Is that categorical enough?”
