FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Democratic candidate running for the House seat once held by Mark Foley has a slim lead over a Republican rival, according to a poll published Sunday. Democrat Tim Mahoney led Republican state Rep. Joe Negron 48 percent to 41 percent, with 11 percent undecided, according to the poll commissioned by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Negron is filling the campaign vacancy left after six-term congressman Foley resigned amid reports that he exchanged sexually explicit Internet messages with teenage boys who worked on Capitol Hill.
Wisconsin: TSA screener arrested
A screener with the Transportation Security Administration was arrested after a passenger reported that she took money from a wallet. The screener, a 26-year-old woman, was taken to jail Saturday awaiting a charge of theft and was being held on $200 bail, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department. The passenger reported losing $20. But officials eventually recovered $235 after the screener’s co-worker told authorities he saw her storing items behind a magazine rack.
D.C.: Spanish-speakers voting suit
The U.S. Department of Justice on Friday sued the city of Philadelphia, claiming it violated the rights of Spanish-speaking voters. The complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania said the city failed to provide language assistance at the polls to most Spanish-speaking voters in recent elections, the department said.
California: Riot breaks out at school
A fight between two high school students erupted into a riot of 500 people, prompting officers to fire bean bags and rubber pellets to scatter the crowd, police said. No major injuries were reported. About 100 officers rushed to Fontana High School after students threw rocks and bottles at officers and one another, according to a Fontana police spokesman. “We don’t know if it was gang related or if it was racially motivated,” he said. “Some people were unhappy with one another, a fight broke out and it spilled over.”
Iowa: Man held in family shootings
A 22-year-old man has been charged with murdering his parents and three teenage sisters at their home in southeastern Iowa, authorities said Sunday. Shawn Bentler is accused of gunning down five family members and faces five counts of first-degree murder, the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office said. He is being held on a $2.5 million bond at the Adams County jail in Quincy, Ill. According to a 911 tape, a gunshot is heard in the background and someone screams, “Shawn, no!” The line then goes dead.
