The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently announced the names of about 16,000 semifinalists nationwide for its annual National Merit Scholarship Program. From that pool, 7,500 will receive scholarships totaling more than $31 million. Students qualify for the program based on high scores on the Preliminary SAT test.
Local semifinalists: Cole Hahn, Arlington High School Career Center; James Marcelia, Bothell, Cedar Park Christian School; Zack Dooley, Logan Milandin, Brian Oler and Chai-Young Yi, Bothell, North Creek High School; Aaron Khouvong, Edmonds-Woodway High School; Elijah Greisz, Everett, Cascade High School; Mary Douglas, Everett, Mariner High School; Sean Murray, Everett, Archbishop Murphy High School; Seo-Yun Chon, Iman Haji, Sean Kim and Samuel Wang, Mill Creek, Henry M. Jackson High School; Cameron Suraci, Mountlake Terrace High School; Alice Cheng, Stacy Jong, Jonathan Ke, Katie Raker, Andrew Shin, Angie Wang and Jiamae Wang, Mukilteo, Kamiak High School; Jonathan Ahrens, Snohomish, Glacier Peak High School.
Students must now complete an application that includes an essay and high SAT test scores. About 90 percent of semifinalists advance to the finalist level.
