SEATTLE — The National Park Service is looking for descendants of homesteaders to help them celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Homestead Act of 1862.
If you are a Washington homesteader or the descendant of one, the park service wants you to consider carrying the Washington state flag at commemoration events in May and June.
People interested in volunteering need to submit a one-page nomination that includes the reason why they would like to participate.
Washington is one of the 30 states that were part of the Homestead Act. The state had more than 58,000 successful homestead claims, representing about 20 percent of state’s total acreage.
