FAIRBANKS, Alaska — A proposed drag racing strip in North Pole is drawing concern from neighbors who fear disturbance from noise.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports the Fairbanks North Star Borough Planning Commission on Tuesday heard three hours of testimony from racers and neighbors.
The Fairbanks Racing Lions is proposing the half-mile racing strip adjacent to North Pole Speedway, a dirt track for stock cars.
Club President Jamie Bodenstadt said the strip will make public roads safer by keeping racers off streets.
Resident Les Warnke said his land abuts the race area and it’s already noisy. He said people have stopped using their backyards during race season because of the noise.
The Racing Lions said the drag strip would be surrounded by a 12-foot berm to reduce noise.
North Pole, despite its name, is about 10 miles southeast of Fairbanks.
