MUKILTEO — Now there’s an alternative to scrounging for money or digging through your wallet for a debit or credit card to pay for parking in Mukilteo.
A new online app, PassportParking, is available to allow people not only to pay for their parking, but to add more parking time from their mobile phone.
“You also can have an online account that has some dollars that you can apply to parking over time,” said Marko Liias, a city spokesman.
The app will work in the areas of the city where there’s paid parking — Lighthouse Park and Front Street.
All people need to know is which parking zone they’re in. Signs are now posted to give people that information.
There’s a surcharge of about 15 cents for people to use the app, Liias said.
The app also can be used to speed processing of parking tickets.
The city’s park rangers can scan license plates with the app, instead of having to hand-write tickets. The information will be uploaded to City Hall rather than having police department staff enter the information into a computer.
More features could be added, such as allowing people to pay for parking tickets through the app and for getting annual city resident parking passes for Lighthouse Park. Residents have to go to City Hall and show proof that they live in the city to get the free parking pass.
Spokane is the other Washington city using the app. It is now being used in 2,000 other cities nationally and internationally, said Kimberly Kufel, a spokeswoman for the company. They include Boston, Chicago, Toronto, Detroit and London.
