BREMERTON — A new commander has taken over the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton.
The Kitsap Sun reported Capt. Howard Markle became the shipyard’s 49th commander on Friday.
The shipyard renovates aircraft carriers in Bremerton and one in Japan, maintains or recycles submarines in the Pacific and sends employees to San Diego, Norfolk, Everett and elsewhere to service the fleet.
Markle is replacing Capt. Stephen Williamson, who has seen the shipyard grow by about 3,000 workers in the past three years. Williamson has been assigned as director of fleet maintenance for the U.S. Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
Markle’s previous position was as operations officer at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, in charge of all ship maintenance. The Pennsylvania native joined the Navy in 1986.
