CHARLESTON, Ore. — A new marine museum and aquarium is set to open in the small fishing town of Charleston on the southern Oregon Coast.
Seven years in the making, the Charleston Marine Life Center will include five separate galleries on two stories. The galleries will focus on coastal ecosystems, deep-water habitats, marine mammals, the local fishing industry and diverse sea life.
The World newspaper reports construction is mostly complete and the museum is set to open later this year.
The 6,000-square-foot center sits on the Charleston Marina, adjacent to a fish processing plant and with a view of the harbor. Backers say it will provide a boost to the town’s struggling economy.
The museum was spearheaded by the nearby University of Oregon Institute of Marine Biology.
