ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A day after hundreds of people clashed with Albuquerque riot officers over a recent police shooting, Gov. Susana Martinez says she understands the public’s frustration but called on protesters to remain calm and let the FBI complete its investigation.
At least one officer was injured and six people arrested as protesters marched for 10 hours Sunday, calling for the police chief and other city officials to resign.
Gas canisters were thrown outside police headquarters, and at one point protesters trapped police in a vehicle and tried to break its windows.
Albuquerque police have been involved in 37 shootings since 2010, 23 of them fatal. The outrage bubbled over with the release of video showing officers fatally shooting a homeless camper as he appeared to be preparing to surrender.
