OLYMPIA — Although a Salvation Army shelter in Olympia usually has room, a new shelter for the homeless is planned in the city.
The People’s House would be a so-called low-barrier shelter with fewer restrictions
The Olympian reports many homeless people said they can’t qualify or won’t abide by Salvation Army rules that include a curfew, banning sex offenders and requiring residents to put money in a savings account. The Salvation Army shelter was less than half full last winter.
A public hearing was planned Wednesday evening at The Olympia Center on the “shelter first” proposal from the Interfaith Works group. No site has been selected but coordinator Meg Martin hopes it can be operating with 40 beds by this winter.
