MARYSVILLE — On winter nights, venturing outside to run or walk along dark streets may not sound appealing.
To encourage people to get off the couch and on the track, the Marysville School District is opening Quil Ceda Stadium at Marysville-Pilchuck High School for Walk Wednesdays.
Every Wednesday, while school is in session, the gate to the track is scheduled to be open and the lights on from 5 to 9 p.m. Everyone is welcome to walk the stadium stairs or trot around the track. The field is not available for use.
“A lot of people, especially in the winter time, they leave for work in the dark and they come home in the dark,” Marysville Athletic Director Greg Erickson said. “They may live in a community where the walkability isn’t the best. … It just kind of provides an opportunity — one day a week they can kind of count on.”
The program began in late October. Erickson said whenever he passes the stadium on Walk Wednesday, he always sees a few people exercising.
Walk Wednesday is not staffed. A custodian is usually in charge of dealing with the stadium lights and gate.
On most evenings, the stadium is locked and dark when it’s not in use.
“We wanted to have access to (connect) people with lightning so they felt safe,” Erickson said.
